Do you have a student driver in the house? Most often, these new drivers are excited about vehicles that are fast and furious. However, keeping our kids safe is our top priority. So, what does that look like when choosing a vehicle for them.
The obvious suspects are airbags, anti-lock brakes and daytime running lights. But, what else? How can you keep your teen driver as safe as possible. Consider the following when searching for your next vehicle.
Safety ratings & Crash Test Scores. You’ll find that often larger vehiciles end up having a higher safety score and are recommended for new teen drivers. Consider those vehicles that have five star ratings and top performance in crash tests
Electronic Stability Control (ESC): ESC helps detect and prevents skids, which is especially helpful if your teen driver is prone to panic swerving. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety estimates that ESC reduces the risk of fatal single-vehicle wrecks by 56% and fatal multiple-vehicle crashes by 32%. Because of its proven effectiveness, the US Government has mandated that all new cars must be equipped with ESC by the 2012 model year.
Safety Options: Look at all the safety technology available in vehicles today. There are so many options out there to help. One new feature that comes standard on the new Hondas is the Blindspot Camera. This safety feature helps eliminate blind spots with simple technology. The cool thing about this technology is that it isn’t a fancy blind spot detection system, it is an enhancement to the side view mirror, which means the price of the car won’t see a hefty increase. While they didn’t invent the technology, they are making it standard on most cars in its lineup.
Engine Size: A 4-cylinder engine is a good choice. It has adequate power and does not encourage reckless driving. Keep temptation for reckless driving at bay.
Minimize Distractions:: Hands-free technology might be a good thing to consider as would any included feature that keeps your teen driver focused on the road.
