Money is a wild thing. Money is the way we can resource the ministries, a way we can support, a way we can support one another, friends that are going through hard times, all those things. But it is also, at least in my life I could say, a great temptation of fear. I thought when I was younger, I think I thought money would bring freedom, and as I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized more and more money has brought fear.
I’ve had times in my life where I’ve had to grocery shop at the dollar store, where Walmart was too expensive, so the dollar store was my grocery store. And then other times and a current time where what God’s done in our lives is to have some money in savings for the first time and things like that. I realized where I thought that money there would provide freedom to make some faith based choices and decisions, and more rest for my heart or mind, it was providing fear. I started checking the savings daily on the mobile app and all those things and going “Is anyone taking money out? Is it still there?”
My wife and I came to a crux this year needing to make, feeling like God was leading us to make a big decision financially, and step away from some guaranteed money of a job I’ve had for a long time, in order to make a wise and good decision for our family. That money was sitting there and it was providing fear like I need to hold on to that. What we started to pray and what God began to say to us was “That is freedom!” God’s provided that so why wouldn’t we step out in faith and say “You’ve provided this, and now we can trust you God and we can move forward and trust that You are going to provide like you have.”
Instead of holding on to that money, let’s hold on to the promise of God, that He will walk with us in whatever we are walking through. So now that money is like, “Yeah, let’s make this faith based decision!” We’ve walked through that, we’re 3 months into that, it’s scary, but man these things begin to, or keep coming up reminding us, no, no, no, the Lord is with us, He’s good to us, and reminding us to be generous and not hold on to that. No let’s be generous like we would any other time in our life like so many have done to us. Money is a thing of fear or freedom and I’d much rather say it freedom, and I’d much rather dive into that world.
