One of my previous jobs in mainstream radio was News Director, pulling together information for the morning newscasts. As you might guess there's a vast reservoir of events happening both locally & globally. I had to figure out what I thought was relevant to listeners and share it within a short window of time.
My task was to "choose the news" and determine how to share each story. I was entrusted by our management to use my own good judgement.
I quickly realized the stories I selected were filtered through my Christian world view, life experiences, and core values.
I remember some high profile events that ran contrary to my beliefs, and I quite frankly wrestled over reporting it at all. By sharing a particular story I didn’t want to imply an endorsement of an event, yet I also knew shedding light on controversial issues might cause like-minded people to take a stand against it.
The reality is everyone in the chain of information we receive in the media has a worldview, life experiences, and core values. It may be totally different than you or I, but it is an influencing factor as to what is designated as “news”... filtering what you hear and don’t hear.
So what does that the mean to you and I? If you want “real news” you have to seek it out.
- Just because something is reported as news doesn’t make it important or true.
- Just because many people may believe something to be true, doesn’t make it true.
- Just because many people may believe something to be right, doesn’t make it right.
- Just because many people may believe something to be wrong, doesn’t make it wrong.
Trust is an important element in our lives, and we need to have it within our closest relationships. That’s why I put my Trust in the Almightily Creator first. Ask Him for help to see the truth, and the path He wants you to go. Then open your Bible and see what God may open your eyes to see. Ask Him every day for discernment and wisdom.
It may not be easy, but be a truth seeker… even when the facts might be inconvenient.
Jesus said: “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32
