Skookum Kids 3rd Birthday Celebration
All are invited to come and celebrate Skookum Kids' 3rd birthday on Sunday, July 8 from 4-7 pm. We’re shutting down the portion of Franklin Street behind Perch & Play to make room for food trunks, carnival games, a bouncy house, and live music from Washington’s own Kuinka.
Skookum Turns 3! is a celebration of the work they've done and the support they've had in our community. It's free to the public. Perch & Play will also be open in case you want to check it out or grab a cold drink.
Come hungry and don't forget the sunscreen!
If you're interested in sponosoring the event, volunteering time to make it happen, or donating some prizes for the kids, please visit www.skookumkids.org/blockparty or email Laura Ann Poehner at lapoehner@skookumkids.org.
About Skookum Kids:
When we opened in 2015, foster care system in Whatcom County was at a crisis point. Too many kids needing placements and not enough foster parents to take them. So, Skookum Kids took a step toward relieving that pressure by opening a group home that we think feels a little more like grandma’s house.
Today—three years after opening our doors, we’ve cared for almost 400 foster kids, licensed 32 foster homes, been commissioned by Washington state to oversee a pilot mentorship program, hired 13 additional staff members, and expanded our offices to three locations. We are the stewards of the movement but our community is the force behind it.
Skookum Kids was founded in 2014 by Ray Deck III in Bellingham, Washington. This non-profit organization exists to repair the foster care system by eliminating the pain points that cause unnecessary stress for foster parents. It is staffed by eleven full-time, seven part-time employees and over 130 volunteers. For more information, visit their website at www.skookumkids.org.
