First time in a long time I ignored warnings to get a flu shot. Of course, this year I get “the flu”. Lucky me, huh? Not so much. Lost my voice for about a week, and am still battling residual chest congestion that I hope will clear out soon.
It’s not hard to catch the annual influenza that invisibly swarms through our towns and neighborhoods. And sometimes we become part of the problem by rejoining life before we should. We might do so because we feel “responsible to meet our obligations”… or maybe we are just tired of being cooped up.
You know, there isn’t a commandment that emphatically states: Thou Shalt Not Share Thine Flu. But, Jesus did give us 2 commandments that reflect what’s in our heart… to love God and love people. You can’t pass along the flu to God, but you sure can to others… and that can hardly be called an act of love. So despite the pressure we may place upon on ourselves to “return to our duties”, perhaps we should take a more thoughtful approach.
How do you know when it’s safe to mingle again with the rest of the population? Wait a day or two after your fever subsides… that’s what the experts advise.
If you don’t have the flu, but know someone who does… your offer to “help cover things” could be just the right medicine to allow that ill person a chance to relax and concentrate on getting better.
A few thoughts from me… what say you?
