We are going through the study “How to Get Through What You’re Going Through” by Rick Warren. He is very familiar with grief and how to walk through unexpected life situations. What do you do when you get really bad news, when you are going through a health crises or someone dies and you are left reeling? I was recently in one of these situations. And, in fact, it hasn’t been the first time, sadly. I’m guessing you know how it feels. The shock you feel.
Jeremiah 17:7-8 (NLT) – But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.
Rick talked about developing an emotional resistance kit. How can we prepare for these inevitable life situations. One thing he said was “Don’t be a spiritual tumbleweed.” Grow spiritual roots. Pray, know Jesus, read your Bible, cultivate spiritual growth. If you are tumbleweed the first evidence of disaster is going to make you blow away. If you have deep roots, as the verse above says, you are going to stand strong.
So, that’s the challenge I have for you today! Take a spiritual inventory. In what areas of your life do you need to do some work – do you need to focus on your prayer life, your Bible reading habits or joining a small group? Pick one, and start the process. Don’t overwhelm yourself with ALL THE THINGS. Pick one area of growth and work on it – baby steps. Start growing those roots and it will serve you well in all areas of your life.
Friends, we’d love to pray for you if you are in the midst of a difficult time in your life. Feel free to leave your prayer requests in the comments below. We also hope you’ll join us on Facebook for more encouragement and laughter. Here are the top 5 posts of this week!
