  • Someone once wrote, "Sow a thought, reap an act. Sow an act, reap a habit. Sow a habit, reap your character. Sow your character, reap your destiny."

  • What do we mean by accountability? In the simplest terms, it is answering the hard questions. Accountability includes opening one's life to a few carefully selected, trusted, loyal confidants who speak the truth—who have the right to examine, to question, to appraise, and to give counsel.

  • God offers instruction, but then it's our move. We must accept His instruction and apply it to our lives. Then, and only then, can we expect to cash in on the benefits of His instruction. So you see, application is the essential link between instruction and change.

  • Almost every week I come into contact with people who have been misled, thinking that success depends solely upon talent or brilliance or education.

  • This week's Gold Star Teacher is Kimberly Preston, from Mount Baker Junior High!

Nominated by Mary Kalsbeek: Our son has struggled with reading and writing since Kindergarten. In 4th grade we created an individual education plan for him. He has made a lot of progress with this in place, but as his elementary days came to an end last year we were worried about the changes Junior High would bring. Ms. Kimberly Preston has made this transition an amazing experience for our family. She has connected with our son and helped cultivate a desire to succeed that has far passed our expectations. The report card that our son brought home a bit over month ago was A's and B's with positive comments from each of his teachers.

This confidence in him is something that brings so much joy to his parents hearts. We sat down to review our son's plan with Ms. Preston earlier this week and as we left the meeting we couldn't be more thankful that God placed this woman in our son's life at such an important time. She is challenging him to reach for the stars, encouraging him to grow and learn more each day, and teaching him to be a good and responsible student.

Not only is she an amazing teacher she is also a very talented coach who reaches the athletes in similar ways she reaches her students. Under her coaching our girls varsity basketball team brought home our school's first state championship in girls basketball a few weeks.
For these reasons we feel Ms. Kimberly Preston is a Gold Star Teacher.

  • Can you remember a recent "grey slush" day? Of course you can. So can I. The laws of fairness and justice were displaced by a couple of Murphy's Laws. Your dream dissolved into a nightmare. High hopes took a hike. Good intentions got lost in a comedy of errors, only this time nobody was laughing. You didn't soar, you slumped. Instead of "pressing on the upward way," you felt like telling Bunyan to move over as you slid down into his Slough of Despond near Doubting Castle, whose owner was Giant Despair. Discouragement is just plain awful.

  • I hope you had a wonderful Easter filled with the reminder of God's amazing resurrection power. He is risen! What a glorious day. Yesterday my kids were playing in the living room while I was sitting and taking an unexpected moment of relaxation watching them. Suddenly...

  • If we hope to demonstrate the level of excellence modelled by Jesus Christ, then we'll have to come to terms with the kingdom we are going to serve: the eternal kingdom our Lord represented and told us to seek (Matthew 6:23) or the temporal kingdom of today.

  • I need to be very candid with you. If you are a "Sunday Christian," you will not stand alone when outnumbered. Apart from a personal and vital faith in Jesus Christ, it is impossible to wage a winning effort against the system called "the world."

  • One of the great American myths is that we are all a bunch of rugged individualists. We would like to think that, but it simply is not true. There are some exceptions, of course, but for the majority it is not that way at all.
