It’s a crazy game. Zoe on her sleeping bag, me pulling it like a super-powered-mommy turbo engine as we cruise through the living room at top speed. She rides it like a magic carpet. I go fast, so if she slides off, she has to scramble to get back on.
She’s getting good. Keeps her body low and tight so her center of balance doesn’t dump her off on the curves. She started riding by herself, but now she brings friends. Six stuffed animals. She hugs them tightly to her. If even one of them falls off, she dives onto the carpet to get him back. She’d rather miss the train than have it go on without one of her friends. I watched her miss the ride four times because Elmo kept falling off.
Her loyalty hit me in the chest like a soccer ball. My heart gets tight with how proud I am of her. I also feel a little sheepish. I do things every day without thinking of the other guy. I’m in a hurry. I hate lines. Traffic bugs me. Why don’t people communicate clearly? I feel impatient. If Penguin fell off, would I notice? Resolving today to practice caring more for the friends on the ride than the ride itself. This means I’ll be bringing more than just myself to PRAISE Fest this year. Good thing our car can fit six!!
