You may not know that C.S. Lewis & J.R.R. Tolkien were good friends. They first met at a faculty meeting at Merton College. Both men had a tremendous love for stories, endured heartache and understand service from their time fighting in World War 1 on the French front. C.S. Lewis was instrumental in encouraging Tolkien to publish his Lord of the Rings trilogy. Following the men’s faith stories you can see how much influence they had on one another. Tolkien’s faith walk was discovered in the Catholic church and he built his stories on the verses in Romans 5, “Where sin increased, the grace of God increased more.” The ultimate goal to show that Jesus Christ has the greatest power. C.S Lewis on the other hand started out as a young atheist and went on a journey of discovery that ultimately led him to giving his life to Christ.
The decisive moment for C.S. Lewis was at a group meeting where several men, including Tolkien would come together and talk literature among other things. It was during these talks that Tolkien helped Lewis understand that Jesus is everything and the only one who can save us from the power of evil and our own sin. It is as a result of this event that the Screwtape Letters are dedicated to his friend Tolkein.
Now, you have the amazing opportunity to take a step into the lives of these two authors. Join us for David Payne’s new drama “Tolkien and Lewis: Wardrobes, Rings, and the Last Goodbye.” This live theatre performance will you bring you into the lives of these two incredible men and reflect on their time together. It is set in Oxford’s Eagle and Child pub, a favorite haunt of C. S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien (Gordon Tett) where these two giants of Fantasy Literature formulated many of their ideas. Following Lewis’ heart attack they are reuniting for what turns out to be the very last time: it is a time to reflect on the inspiration behind their writings, their lifelong friendship and so much more. And all interspersed with the humor for which both were renowned. No English pub is complete without a bubbly barmaid and Hattie (Audrey Ney) is a welcome interruption to the proceedings.
Join us for this event on 12/15 at 7pm. Get your tickets now.
