God has always loved you. From the moment He created you, He wanted to be with you. Psalm 139 says He formed you in your mother’s womb, creating you in a wonderful way that makes you unique to all other people. In fact, there are an average of three million genetic differences between you and everyone else—unless you are an identical twin, and even then your fingerprints are uniquely your own.
Simply put, God’s creation is not complete without you. Psalm 139 goes on to say that God thinks about you constantly!
How precious are your thoughts about me, O God.
They cannot be numbered!
I can’t even count them;
they outnumber the grains of sand!
And when I wake up,
you are still with me!
With someone loving us this much, how could we ever feel lonely or afraid? God’s love is constant, but experiencing it is up to us—will we receive God’s love for us, or will we reject it?
The ball is in our court and here’s why …
God loves us, but we don’t get the full benefits of His love until we love Him back. And we all know that real love is voluntary! God wants us to choose to love Him, not because we have to, but because we want to. He gives us the freedom to live inside of His love or to choose to live outside of His love.
Choosing to love God and be loved by Him is not a one-time decision. As a child it may have been easy for us to believe God loves us and to love Him back. The question is, will we continue to believe and love as we get older.
The problem for us is that living inside of God’s love means doing things His way, and we naturally want to do our own thing. Just like a two-year-old whose favorite word is “No,” we think we know better than God and we choose our own path instead of the one He has for us. When we do this, He lets us follow that path … even though it’s outside of His love for us.
Like any good parent, God follows closely behind us as we go our merry way. He keeps calling our name, and He’s there with open arms if we choose to turn around and come to Him. But He will not force us to follow, and He will not keep us from tripping over things on our path that may injure us. He allows us to experience what life is like outside of His love because He wants us to see how wonderful His LOVE and the LIFE He has for us truly are.
God’s goal is always for you to live inside His love. He wants to give you life and to bless you. His path in our life still includes hard things, but He is right by our side, and we can have His peace.
Which path are you on today? Are you following yourself, or are you following God? It’s not too late to choose God’s path of love for the first time or to return to it. Will you choose it today?
