Brant and Sherri discuss the popularity of pumpkin spice products, particularly lattes, during the Fall season. Brant suggests that the hype around these products is more just ‘mass hysteria,’ as sales tend to spike when they’re first introduced, but drop significantly by October. Despite some listeners claiming they enjoy these products throughout the season, Brant insists that the popularity is largely due to hype and lying.

Brant:
It’s that time of year again! That’s when everybody starts freaking out about pumpkin spice lattes because they’re starting to introduce ’em already. Pumpkin spice cereal, all this kind of stuff’s coming out. My theory has been that it’s all like mass hysteria. People don’t really like ’em that much. They just act like it because what you’re supposed to do.
Sherri:
But we’ve had many listeners call and say they do like it.
Brant:
Yeah, and I appreciate their anecdotal information. However, this year, my theory has in fact been proven to be true.
Sherri:
How so?
Brant:
I saw this on an analytics blog, but they did the math on this. There’s a spike when they first introduced the products, like in Starbucks and other places, and the pumpkin spice lattes about this time of year. But by the time you get to October, it totally bottoms out, the sales. So it’s supposed to be like this. Hey, it’s autumn. That’s when I love my pumpkin. No, you like it when everybody starts hyping it. And when the hype dissipates, even though they’re still available, people don’t buy them anymore. Cause, again, they don’t like ’em that much.
Sherri:
But people have said, I like it. I drink it all the way through the season.
Brant:
And they’re lying. That’s all. And… if you’ll note. Look at their pants, they’re on fire. Take heed. And dare I say, hanging from a telephone wire.
Sherri:
That tells it all.
