You know about the “five second rule?” You know the drill… Food dropped on the floor is safe to eat if picked up within five seconds. However, studies from Rutgers, San Diego State University, and Clemson University have all debunked this rule, finding that bacteria can contaminate the food as soon as it touches the ground. Brant and Sherri suggest that researchers should keep studying the rule until they get the desired result, which is in favor of the rule.

Brant:
Everybody’s heard of the five second rule. I’m sure you have too. You drop something on the floor. You get five seconds. That’s okay. I’ll keep eating it.
Sherri:
Yes.
Brant:
It was only down there for a little bit.
Sherri:
Everything will be fine.
Brant:
What could have happened? Well, they just did a study at Rutgers about this. Found out that the five second rule is misleading. There is bacteria on there. Basically. That’s the upshot. Five second rule doesn’t work.
Sherri:
Can it be a two second, one second, or as soon as it touches the ground, there’s a problem?
Brant:
I guess they’re saying just throw it out. What’s interesting to me, so the Rutgers study just did it. San Diego State University did this study back in 2012 and found out the same thing, that the five second rule shouldn’t apply. And that followed a Clemson study in 2010, had found the same thing before that. So they keep discovering,
Sherri:
Just to be clear, you’re like eight when you do it. So all of these people are studying what eight year old are doing. Yeah.
Brant:
They’re all like, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, please. And they keep trying again. And I say, if you’re on a research team, let’s say you’re at the University of Nebraska or something. Just go ahead, try it again. Let’s see what, because eventually we just want to know this works. Okay? Just keep one more lab team. Try it again until we get the answer we want.
