This is my second year of starting seeds inside to give them a headstart when I can finally put them in the ground (around Mother’s Day where I live). But I have to say that I look at those seeds when they come out of the package—some of which are small enough to sit on the tip of a toothpick—and I wonder how on earth something that small could grow into a plant and actually produce flowers or fruit.
It takes faith to plant these seeds! What if it’s just a big waste of my time? What if I buy my supplies, make my dirt pods, poke hundreds of seeds in one at a time, make sure they get 12 hours of light a day, and water them when they need it only to have nothing come out of the dirt?
Not to mention that this year I bought specialty seeds while visiting Butchart Gardens in Victoria BC and from Floret in Skagit County, and those are not cheap!
Despite what appears to be impossible odds for success, I plant. I watch. I pray. And after a week under grow lights while being watered, sure enough a tiny green speck appears on top of a few of the soil pods. A few days later, I see little shoots start coming up and uncurling as they reach toward the light.
When this happens, I have a ridiculous wave of happiness pour over me and I do a happy dance! I begin to sing to my baby seedlings—encouraging them to keep growing, telling them how pleased I am with them and how beautiful they are to me.
The faith it takes for me to plant seeds for my garden opens my eyes to a few spiritual truths (expressed in my own words):
- God does a happy dance when He sees you grow. Zephaniah 3:17 says you are delightful to Him and He sings over you with great joy! He is cheering you on and He is making you beautiful!
- It takes faith to be a seed planter—but we can trust God to bring something beautiful out of the words of love and truth we speak to those around us. (Luke 8:4-15 the Parable of the Seed Sower)
- The seeds planted in us as we read the Bible and allow healthy believers in Jesus to speak into our lives—and that we plant in others’ lives—will grow because God promises His Word always succeeds in what He sends it to do (Isaiah 55:11).
- Even when we see no evidence of it, there is a lot happening beneath the surface of our lives and in the lives of those we love. Our job is to keep praying and loving. God makes the seeds grow (1 Corinthians 3:6).
- It doesn’t matter how big or small a seed is. Each one was designed to bring forth new life that is unique and gives glory to God. In the same way, you have been created just the way He wants you to be. He designed you for specific good works that show Him to the world and fill you with joyful satisfaction (Ephesians 2:10).
Do you want to have a fruitful life? Take a step of faith today and plant some seeds! This was the result of the seeds I planted last year.
