Brant recently did an experiment to overcome his social awkwardness. He donned a cool t-shirt with a nod to Charlotte Bronte’s “Jane Eyre,” and strutted his stuff to the gym, hoping to encourage conversation. Sherri suggests the gym might not have been the best place for such an attempt.
What did Brant learn? Men don’t want to talk about anything Victorian.

Brant:
So, just so you know, I’m pretty awkward socially, but I feel like if I could just get past the small talk and talk about something interesting, I’ll be fine. So, I did a little experiment today. I seriously did this. I see people at the gym I go to, and a lot of times they’re talking about whatever.
Sherri:
Yeah.
Brant:
I don’t know how to do that.
Sherri:
Okay. How to talk about just general things?
Brant:
Yeah.
Sherri:
Okay.
Brant:
But I, I honestly thought, I feel silly about it now. I’m not kidding.
Sherri:
Go ahead. What did you do?
Brant:
I just thought it’d be nice to talk to people. So, I thought, well, I’ll wear a shirt. It’s like a conversation piece.
Sherri:
Okay. Yeah.
Brant:
So, I wore my T-shirt that says Jane Eyre on it from the book. It says Charlotte Bronte. So it’s a nice shirt. I thought maybe somebody would be like, oh yeah, I love Victorian… Rich….
Sherri:
Oh, you thought that the shirt…
Brant:
I thought somebody would say, oh yeah, I love that book or something.
Sherri:
I thought you wore the shirt and then you approached somebody with conversation, based on the shirt. You were waiting for conversation to come to you, based on the shirt. I’m guessing it didn’t,
Brant:
No.
Sherri:
…due to the somber tone of your voice. It didn’t. It was a good plan. That’s a good plan. Probably not in the gym.
Brant:
Probably not. Some of the guys are just clanking the iron and…
Sherri:
They don’t want to talk about your t-shirt.
Brant:
They don’t want to talk about anything Victorian.
